Sun Oven – Chickpea Curry

A friend found a new in box sun oven at Goodwill for a deal and picked it up for us.  Seems like the desert should be a perfect place for one!

Since it was our first go, we went for a simple slow cooker recipe, chickpea curry:

  • 1 onion chopped up roughly
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 inch peeled and minced ginger
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp coriander
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 3 cups cooked chickpeas

We pressure cooked the chickpeas and I sauteed the onions and garlic on the stove.  Then we chucked the whole mess into a pot, filled it with enough water to cover, put it in the oven and aimed the oven at the sun.

We left it outside all day, re-aiming the oven occasionally as we thought of it.  Temps got as high as about 300, but average around 270.  Hotter than a slow cooker.

After about 5 hours it was dinner time.  We pressure cooked some brown rice, crossed our fingers, and pulled the food from the oven.  It came out wonderfully!   I think we could get away with not sauteing the onions or garlic at all; they just melted into the sauce anyway.

Time for a much more complex sun oven recipe!
